The Ruben Centre

Ruben Centre consists of a primary school, medical clinic, community development and vocational training facilities.
Ruben Centre, Nairobi, Kenya

The Ruben Centre currently operates 7 programs providing health, education and social development services for the people of the Mukuru slum, about 10km form central Nairobi. Mukuru is made up of about 20 villages which house about 900,000 people in inhuman conditions. The vision of the Ruben Centre is for a just and empowered Mukuru community.

Ruben Centre consists of a primary school, medical clinic, community development and vocational training facilities. The primary school provides for around 2000 children from nursery to class 8 with about 27 teachers. The medical clinic employs 3 nurses, clinical officer, laboratory technician, pharmacist and an HIV/AIDS counsellor. The clinic receives up to 200 presentations a day for general medical consultations and treatment. Antenatal care is provided and testing and treatment programs for TB and HIV. Preventative health education programs are also conducted. A social worker runs the community development unit which works collaboratively with the local people in the villages in providing services. The vocational training facility provides opportunities for the development of employable skills in dressmaking and knitting.

The Metanoia Matters website is now seeking assistance in the following areas;

SKILLS REQUIRED

Architect

Estimated time frame – To be negotiated with the Ruben Centre Director

Suggested time commitment – One hour per month

What we need

The Ruben Centre school requires the expertise of an architect to contribute their ideas on the construction of a high school building and the appropriate use of space leading to the development of the 5-acre site in the Mukuru slums.

How will this help

Of the 2,000 primary school children, having the facilities to further build on their needed education is something that can turn these children’s world around.  The construction of a high school will provide them with a learning environment where they can develop further and explore their already creative imaginations.

These new facilities will contribute to their transformation and a learning journey that will lead them away from the everyday poverty experiences that they are accustomed too.

Make a difference

With the donation of your innovative ideas and experience you will not only be helping to provide a physically well-built structure but you will be assisting to build the foundations of education for the children of the Mukuru slums.

Physical Education and Fitness Advisor

Estimated Time Frame – To be negotiated with the Ruben Centre Director

Suggested time commitment – One hour per month

What we need

The Ruben Centre school requires the expertise, motivation and knowledge of a physical education and fitness advisor who can contribute to the health and wellness education programme for the children of the Mukuru slums.

How will this help

Children have different ways of learning, some learn through books and observation whilst others excel through physical contact, role play and hands on engagement.  With the placement of a physical education advisor your motivation and enthusiasm with what you know and love will help these children gain the valuable knowledge and experiences that they so deserve.

You will be their learning vehicle to better explore and understand their minds and bodies through the growth development phase that all children experience at this important time of their lives.

Make a difference

With your contribution of ideas and experiences you will be helping to provide these children with valuable knowledge that could be the life changing turning point for them and their families on a journey to better understanding their inner selves within the lifestyle of poverty that they are accustomed too.

You will be assisting to build the foundations of education for the children of the Mukuru Slums.

Marketing and Communications

Estimated Time Frame – To be negotiated with the Ruben Centre Director

Suggested time commitment – One hour per month

What we need

The Ruben Centre requires a passionate, creative communicator and writer who can assist us with developing well-crafted project proposals that will effectively highlight who we are and what we set about to do. A person who can effectively engage those individuals and organisations more fortunate from the wider world, to contribute to our calls for assistance is what can help the people of these Mukuru Slums.

How will this help

The Ruben Centre – a hive and central point of several projects initiated and implemented for the people and with the help of the people – has limited expertise and staff resources to fully attend to the start-up aspects of projects that will contribute to the provision of the basic needs of life for the Mukuru slums community.

With your expertise and enthusiasm you can help us to address these needs, get these projects off the ground, have them one step closer to initiation and make them one step closer to reality for this community.

Make a difference

With your experience and creative contributions you will become part of the building blocks to providing a better and humane living environment for this some 600,000 populated community.

You will be assisting in a journey that is shared by others to create a better and humane environment and to show that there is so much more for these people than the lifestyle of poverty that they are accustomed too.
